3DS to STL: what carries over and what does not

3DS can carry appearance as well as shape: colours and materials, and often texture images, on top of the geometry. STL stores geometry alone, a list of triangles with no colour at all, so the model arrives as one plain surface. That suits printing, where colour comes from the filament, and loses anything that existed only as a texture. 3DS can hold motion as well as shape: a skeleton, keyframes or morph targets that move the model over time. STL stores one static shape, so the result is a single pose and the animation itself does not carry over.
