DT2 to PLT: what to expect from the conversion

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. PLT expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. A line in a DT2 image is several pixels wide, so tracing it can mean different things and the mode is yours to choose. Centreline returns a single line running down the middle of each stroke, which is what a scanned drawing needs: one entity per line, snappable and dimensionable, rather than a long thin rectangle around it. Outline follows both edges and returns closed shapes, which suits clipart, logos and anything that will be filled or cut. A precision setting controls how closely the traced paths follow the pixel edges. One thing to plan for: vectorised output from this path is black and white, so colour in the DT2 does not survive as colour in the PLT.

DT2 is the file extension for Level 2 of Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED), the high-resolution tier of the elevation series standardized in MIL-PRF-89020 by the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). A file of this type covers a one-degree by one-degree cell with a post spacing of 1 arc-second, about 30 meters at the equator, which makes it suitable for detailed terrain work such as viewshed modeling, slope analysis, route planning, and flood simulation. It is the most detailed of the three standard levels, following the .dt0 and .dt1 products. The content is organized as header records with identification and accuracy information, followed by a regular grid of elevation values for the cell. Because of its fine sampling, Level 2 files are considerably larger than those of the lower levels.
