ISG is a text file format of the International Service for the Geoid, an official service of the International Association of Geodesy, based at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy. The service collects geoid models from many countries and republishes them in this single format, so that users do not have to deal with a different file layout for every country. A geoid model describes the shape of the surface of mean sea level, and it is what allows heights from satellite positioning to be converted into heights above sea level. A file of this type holds the geoid heights as numbers on a regular net of points, accompanied by a header that names the model, its author and year, and the area it covers. Some files also hold models given at scattered points.
