What changes when you convert NTF to HPG

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. HPG expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the HPG if they need to stay editable.

NTF is an extension used by two different geographic formats. The first is the National Imagery Transmission Format, a US and NATO standard for satellite and aerial images, in which a file can carry one or several pictures together with graphics, text, and detailed information about the sensor, the time, and the security classification. The second is the National Transfer Format of Great Britain, a British Standard from 1988 that is the usual format for digital map data of Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency, such as contours, elevation models, road and river networks, and administrative boundaries. The two have nothing in common except the three letters, and the first bytes of the file show which one it is.

What are HPG files?

HPG is a vector image format created in a standard programming language called HPGL (Hewlett-Packard graphics language). Other extensions created in this language include PLT, HP2 and PL2. All are called "plotter files" and are created by drawing programs such as AutoCAD to be printed using a device specialized in vector graphics. An HPG file uses a line series of two-letter codes to render an image and can also include parameters.
