What are PBF files?
PBF files contain map data in a compact binary form, and the same extension is used for two unrelated formats. An OpenStreetMap PBF file is a sequence of blocks, each of which consists of the length of a short header, a header that names the type of the block, and the block itself, which is either stored raw or compressed with zlib. The first block is of type OSMHeader and describes the file and the features it needs, and all the following blocks are of type OSMData, each holding a group of about eight thousand objects, the nodes, ways, and relations of OpenStreetMap. To save space, text such as tag keys and values is kept in a table of strings, and objects refer to it by number, while the identifiers and coordinates of nodes are stored as differences from the previous node, in the dense form. The result is the most compact way of keeping OpenStreetMap data, but it cannot be read in a text editor. A Mapbox Vector Tile, the other format, is a single tile of a web map, written in the same Protocol Buffers encoding, with named layers, features of points, lines, and polygons, integer coordinates in the grid of the tile, and attributes kept in shared lists of keys and values.
