What are VCT files?
VCT is a file that lists the shapes of one IDRISI map layer, one after another, each with its number and its coordinates. The data are stored feature by feature: for every object the file gives its identifier, then how many points define it, then the X and Y coordinates of each point, and the next object follows in the same way. A point file, a line file, a polygon file, and a text file all share this one structure, and for a text layer the file keeps only the position of each label, while the label texts are kept in a separate attribute values file. A file contains only one type of feature. The identifier can be an integer or a real number, and it is the link to the attribute data, which may be kept in a database or in ASCII attribute files with the .adc and .avl extensions. Each VCT file must be paired with a documentation file with the .vdc extension, whose first line reads IDRISI Vector A.1, followed by the data type of the identifiers, whether the file is binary or ASCII, the object type, the extent, and the reference system, which can point to a .ref file.
