VSI to PPM: what carries over and what does not

VSI is a pyramidal whole-slide image: one file carries the same scanned slide at several magnifications, and the largest level can run past 100,000 pixels on a side. PPM holds a single flat picture at one resolution. That makes the magnification the decisive choice, because there is no sensible original size to fall back on here: the full-resolution level of a slide scan is larger than most image software will open at all. PPM is lossless, so nothing further is discarded during conversion. What it cannot do is restore detail that VSI compression already removed, and the output file will usually be considerably larger.
