What are ZPL files?
ZPL (Zebra Programming Language) is a text-based page description language for Zebra thermal printers, in which every command starts with the ^ or ~ character followed by a one- or two-letter name and optional comma-separated parameters.
A printout is enclosed in ^XA and ^XZ, and a file may contain several of them, one after another. Each element is a field: ^FO sets its origin in dots from the top-left corner, ^FD holds the text or the value to encode, and ^FS closes the field. Text uses the built-in fonts selected with ^A and ^CF, barcodes have their own commands, such as ^BC for Code 128, ^BQ for QR, and ^BX for Data Matrix, boxes and lines are drawn with ^GB, and images are embedded with ^GF or stored in the printer with ~DG. Because coordinates are in dots, a layout designed for 203 dpi prints at a different size on a 300 dpi printer. For receipts, the length is set with ^LL when continuous media is used, so a receipt of any length can be printed from variable data.
For graphics output, a conversion renders the commands as a bitmap of the printed page and saves it as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or PDF for a preview, an archive, or an electronic copy of a receipt or label, with the density of the printer taken into account. Supported by ZebraDesigner.
