What changes when you convert 001 to PLT

A .001 file is not a chart on its own but an update to one. An electronic navigational chart starts as a .000 base cell, and each numbered file after it records the corrections issued since. Converted alone, an update contains only those edits. To get the current chart, convert the .000 base cell with its updates in the same folder. Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. PLT expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything.

What are 001 files?

001 is the file extension of the first update to an electronic navigational chart (ENC) in the IHO S-57 format. Sea charts change all the time: a buoy is moved, a wreck is found, a channel is dredged, a depth is corrected. Instead of sending the whole chart again, the hydrographic office issues a small update file that lists only what is new, changed, or removed, and the first of them has the extension .001. The file has the same name as the base chart cell, whose extension is .000, and it cannot be used on its own. Later updates follow as .002, .003, and so on. Most of these changes correspond to the official Notices to Mariners.
