Before you convert ACE2 to DCM

Every cell in an ACE2 file holds a measurement rather than a colour, usually elevation in metres, running from sea level up to whatever the highest point in the tile happens to be. DCM stores brightness, so the conversion stretches that range across a grey or colour scale. What you get is a readable picture of the terrain, and it is the right thing for a relief map or a figure. What you no longer have is the data: sampling a pixel in the DCM returns a shade, not an altitude. ACE2 tiles are laid out in degrees, and a degree of longitude shrinks towards the poles: at 60° north it spans half the ground distance of a degree of latitude. The DCM keeps the tile's square grid, so away from the equator the terrain appears stretched east to west. That is harmless for a texture or a shaded relief, and it matters as soon as the image is used for slopes, distances or a 3D model.
