The ASC (Esri ASCII Grid) format stores raster geospatial data as plain text. Developed by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), it describes a rectangular grid of cells using a short header — number of columns and rows, coordinates of the lower-left corner, cell size and a no-data value — followed by the cell values themselves, written row by row as ordinary numbers. Because the entire grid is human-readable text, ASC is widely used for exchanging elevation models, slope maps and other continuous surfaces between GIS packages that would otherwise share no common binary format.

Other Netpbm formats include PPM (Portable Pixmap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap), also known under the collective name of PNM (Portable Anymap). A PGM file includes a grayscale image, can work on a UNIX platform, as well as on Windows or Mac OS X, and can render a scope of up to 255 grayscale colors.
