Technical note

Before you convert ASC to PPM

Every cell in an ASC file holds a measurement rather than a colour, usually elevation in metres, running from sea level up to whatever the highest point in the tile happens to be. PPM stores brightness, so the conversion stretches that range across a grey or colour scale. What you get is a readable picture of the terrain, and it is the right thing for a relief map or a figure. What you no longer have is the data: sampling a pixel in the PPM returns a shade, not an altitude. ASC carries georeferencing: a coordinate reference system, and the real-world position and ground size of every pixel. PPM has nowhere to record any of that. The picture transfers intact, the location does not, so the output cannot be dropped onto a map afterwards without being placed by hand. Keep the ASC original if the data still has to go back into a GIS.

ASC to PPM Conversion

What are ASC files?

The ASC (Esri ASCII Grid) format stores raster geospatial data as plain text. Developed by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), it describes a rectangular grid of cells using a short header — number of columns and rows, coordinates of the lower-left corner, cell size and a no-data value — followed by the cell values themselves, written row by row as ordinary numbers. Because the entire grid is human-readable text, ASC is widely used for exchanging elevation models, slope maps and other continuous surfaces between GIS packages that would otherwise share no common binary format.

What are PPM files?

PPM or Portable Pixelmap files are image files included in Netpbm, an open source graphics program. The other widely used Netpbm formats are PGM (Portable Graymap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap). All three are image formats and are sometimes called collectively PNMs (Portable Anymap format). While PGMs contains grayscale images, PPMs include color images and they represent intermediary files used in the conversion of less known formats using the Portable Bitmap Utilities. PPM files are mostly operated on UNIX and Intel-based platforms.
