BIL to AVIF: what carries over and what does not

Every cell in a BIL file holds a measurement rather than a colour, usually elevation in metres, running from sea level up to whatever the highest point in the tile happens to be. AVIF stores brightness, so the conversion stretches that range across a grey or colour scale. What you get is a readable picture of the terrain, and it is the right thing for a relief map or a figure. What you no longer have is the data: sampling a pixel in the AVIF returns a shade, not an altitude. Missing cells in an elevation grid, such as water, radar shadow or the edge of a survey, are not empty: they hold a sentinel value, -32768 in SRTM, -32767 in DTED and very often -9999 in ESRI grids. Counted as a real height, that value stretches the scale so far that the actual terrain collapses into a few near-identical shades. When an AVIF output looks flat and washed out, a void treated as data is the usual cause.

BIL is a binary raster format developed by ESRI to store multi-band remote sensing data, hyperspectral imagery, and continuous surface models such as Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). As an uncompressed layout where pixel data is organized sequentially by lines across all available spectral bands, a file of this type cannot be read independently because it completely lacks embedded geospatial or structural metadata. To function within a geographic information system, a .bil file must be accompanied by a plain-text sidecar file with a .hdr extension, which explicitly defines critical parameters including the total number of rows and columns, the band count, the data type, byte order, and optional georeferencing information. This raw format is traditionally complemented by other sibling files like .blw for spatial coordinates, .stx for statistics, and .prj for the map projection.
