BYN is a binary grid format developed by the Canadian Geodetic Survey of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to distribute geoid models and height conversion grids, such as CGG2013a and HT2_0. A file of this type stores a regular grid of geoid heights, which allows ellipsoidal heights obtained from GNSS measurements to be converted into heights above the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013). The file consists of an 80-byte header and a data section. The header gives the grid boundaries and spacing in arc-seconds, the size of each value, and a scale factor, while the data section holds whole numbers instead of decimals, which keeps the file compact. Companion files with the .err extension use the same structure to describe the accuracy of the model.
What are PGM files?
The PGM or Portable Graymap format is part of a package of open source graphics programs called Netpbm. Other Netpbm formats include PPM (Portable Pixmap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap), also known under the collective name of PNM (Portable Anymap).
