Questions & Answers
CMD files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are CMD files?
CMD files of this kind are plain-text cutting jobs in which every instruction is a tag in angle brackets followed by numbers. The HEAD tag names the design file that the job was made from, VERS gives the version of the format, and MOVE, ZEPR, and PULL set the starting position and the feed of the material. The job is divided into panels, and each panel begins with a PANO tag and its number. Inside a panel, a PNCH tag followed by a DRILL line makes a hole at the given X and Y position. A SEGA tag sets the start point of a path, and it is followed either by a CUTME line, which lists the points of a polyline along which the machine cuts, or by a DRAG line with the end point of a line that is drawn or scored without being cut through. A TEXT tag places a label, for example FLAP, at a given position on the panel. The coordinates are decimal numbers measured from the origin of the sheet, the pieces of one job are laid out side by side on the material, and the closed outlines are given as lists of points that end where they began. The file is not a drawing: it holds the movements of a tool, so it should be opened in the software that made it or converted to a vector format to view the shapes of the panels.
