Technical note

CUB to DXF: what carries over and what does not

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. DXF expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. How good the result is depends almost entirely on the CUB going in. Clean line art, a logo or a drawing scanned at 300 dpi or more traces into geometry you can work with. A photograph does not: continuous tone has no contours to follow, so tracing it produces thousands of tiny shapes and a file nobody can edit. Scan or export at the highest resolution available, and prefer a lossless original, because compression artefacts along an edge become ripples in the traced path.

Map Data Workflow

From map data to a working drawing

Site plans, utility routes and parcel boundaries often start out as CUB and end up in DXF. reaConverter turns the layers into drawing entities in batch, so a full project folder moves across in one run.

  • Convert every layer in a folder to DXF with the same settings
  • Go the other way too, from DWG to Shapefile, when the GIS team needs the drawings back
  • Render the same data to PDF for a quick review copy
  • Pick up new data automatically with Watch Folders, or script the job from the command line

Everything runs on your PC, which matters for cadastral, utility and client data that should not pass through an upload form.

While one-time DXF to JPG conversions can be handled through online tools, daily or recurring tasks demand dedicated software. For over a year now, reaConverter has been my reliable solution—consistently delivering quality results without the hassles of cloud-based alternatives.

In architecture, sharing DXF files with clients is impractical. reaConverter lets me create universally accessible PDFs in seconds—no more awkward 'Can you open this?' moments during presentations.

I can't begin to describe the hours I wasted trying to convert DXF to DWG online—it was pure time theft! When my boss handed me a flash drive demanding instant batch conversion (way outside my usual work), I suffered through two days of upload/download hell. A forum suggestion changed everything: reaConverter automated the entire process. Ten minutes later? Mission accomplished!
