Questions & Answers
CUB files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are CUB files?
CUB (USGS Astrogeology ISIS Cube, Version 3) is a hybrid text and binary raster container for planetary image data. The file begins with a keyword-based label that opens with the IsisCube object and includes a Core object specifying the byte offset of the pixel data, the storage format, dimensions in samples, lines, and bands, and a Pixels group with the data type (8-bit unsigned, 16-bit signed, or 32-bit real), byte order, base, and multiplier. By default, pixels are written in tiles of 128 by 128 samples, which speeds up random access, though a band sequential layout is also possible. Real-valued cubes reserve special floating-point values for null, low and high instrument saturation, and low and high representation saturation, which must be masked during conversion. The Mapping group carries the projection name, target radii, latitude and longitude conventions, pixel resolution, and upper-left corner coordinates, enabling georeferencing on other bodies. Conversion to graphics means untiling the data, applying the multiplier and base, masking special values, stretching the range to a grayscale image, and optionally combining three bands into an RGB composite. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF. Supported by ISIS, QGIS, Global Mapper, and ENVI.
