What are DOCM files?
DOCM is the macro-enabled version of the DOCX format. It has the same package structure as a DOCX file, a ZIP archive with XML parts for the text, styles, and media, and in addition it carries a VBA project with the code of the macros. In the extensions of Office Open XML, the letter x marks a format without macros, and the letter m marks a format that may contain macros. Word saves a document with macros only in this format: if a macro is added and the file is saved as DOCX, Word warns that the macros will be removed and offers DOCM instead. The macros are disabled by default, and the program displays a security warning, and the user has to enable them for the file to work as intended. For this reason, mail filters and security programs often treat DOCM files with suspicion, and the files should come only from trusted sources.
