What are DT2 files?
DT2 is the file extension for Level 2 of Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED), the high-resolution tier of the elevation series standardized in MIL-PRF-89020 by the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). A file of this type covers a one-degree by one-degree cell with a post spacing of 1 arc-second, about 30 meters at the equator, which makes it suitable for detailed terrain work such as viewshed modeling, slope analysis, route planning, and flood simulation. It is the most detailed of the three standard levels, following the .dt0 and .dt1 products. The content is organized as header records with identification and accuracy information, followed by a regular grid of elevation values for the cell. Because of its fine sampling, Level 2 files are considerably larger than those of the lower levels.
