What are GRB2 files?
GRB2 (GRIB Edition 2) is a binary format for regularly distributed meteorological and environmental fields, defined by the WMO. Each message starts with the letters GRIB, a 16-byte indicator with the discipline, edition number, and total length, and closes with 7777. Between them are numbered sections: identification, an optional local use section, grid definition, product definition, data representation, an optional bitmap, and the data itself. The grid, product, and data representation sections are built from templates, which allow the same format to describe latitude and longitude grids, projected grids, forecasts, ensembles, and observations. Sections 3 to 7 can repeat, so one message may hold several fields. The values are packed with a reference value and scale factors, using simple or complex packing, and the bitmap marks missing points. To convert a GRB2 file to graphics, a program lists the fields, selects one by parameter, level, and time, decodes the packing, applies the bitmap, and places the values on the grid described by the template. The resulting field is drawn with a color scale as PNG, JPEG, or TIFF, or saved as GeoTIFF to keep the coordinates. Supported by degrib and the NCAR Command Language.
