What changes when you convert GRB2 to PPM

GRB2 is a container for scientific arrays, not a picture. One file usually holds several variables, such as temperature, pressure or wind, often across a series of time steps and a stack of vertical levels, each stored as floating-point values in its own units. PPM holds one flat image, so the conversion has to reduce all of that to a single slice and map its values onto shades. Treat the result as a snapshot for a report or a slide: the data itself stays in the GRB2. GRB2 carries georeferencing: a coordinate reference system, and the real-world position and ground size of every pixel. PPM has nowhere to record any of that. The picture transfers intact, the location does not, so the output cannot be dropped onto a map afterwards without being placed by hand. Keep the GRB2 original if the data still has to go back into a GIS.

GRB2 is a file extension for the second edition of GRIB (General Regularly-distributed Information in Binary form), a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standard for gridded weather, ocean, and climate data. Compared with the first edition, GRIB2 describes the data in greater detail and with higher precision, including coordinates stored in micro-degrees and a larger range of parameters, vertical levels, and message lengths. A file of this type is a series of messages, and a single message can contain several data fields that share the same origin and date.
