What are GRD files?
GRD is an extension used by several grid formats, and each of them is recognized by the beginning of the file. A Surfer grid starts with DSAA for the text version, DSBB for the Surfer 6 binary version, or a different signature for Surfer 7, which stores more precise numbers and extra information about faults. All Surfer versions describe the number of rows and columns, the coordinate range, and the lowest and highest values, and they mark empty nodes with the very large number 1.70141e38. A Northwood numeric grid starts with its own signature and stores the values as scaled integers, together with a coordinate description and a color scale. An R raster dataset consists of a readable .grd header, organized in sections, and a binary .gri file with the values. To convert any of these files to graphics, a program first identifies the variant, reads the grid size and range, and loads the values, treating empty nodes as transparent. The values are then mapped to a grayscale or color scale, as for an elevation map, producing a picture in PNG, JPEG, or TIFF, or a GeoTIFF with coordinates.
