Questions & Answers
HFZ files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are HFZ files?
HFZ is an HF2 heightfield file wrapped in gzip compression, which makes it the form most often used for storage and exchange. Inside the wrapper, the data follow the HF2 layout: a short header, optional extended blocks that can carry the map location, and a series of square tiles, each with its own scale and offset. Heights are stored as differences between neighboring cells and rounded to a vertical precision chosen when the file is saved, so smooth terrain compresses very well and rough terrain compresses less. This also explains why an HFZ file may be smaller than the same landscape in a fixed-depth format. A 16-bit TER file, for example, always has the same step, which for a 640 m height range is about 9.8 mm, and it wastes space on detail that nobody needs. To convert HFZ to graphics, a program unpacks the gzip layer, decodes the tiles into elevations, and creates a grayscale heightmap, a colored elevation map, or a shaded relief picture. Use of 16-bit output keeps fine height steps, while 8-bit output is coarser but smaller. The picture can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with coordinates. Supported by L3DT.
