What are HGT files?
HGT (SRTM height file) is one of the simplest elevation formats in use: a raw grid of numbers with nothing else in the file. Every value is a signed 16-bit integer in big-endian byte order, giving the height of one cell in meters, and the rows run from west to east, starting at the northern edge. A tile with 3-arc-second spacing holds 1201 by 1201 cells, and a tile with 1-arc-second spacing holds 3601 by 3601 cells. The outermost row and column of each tile repeat those of the neighbors, so tiles join without a gap. Areas where the radar could not measure, such as steep mountains or flat deserts, are marked with the value -32768 in versions that were not void-filled. Because there is no header, the position of the tile is read from the file name, and renaming the file breaks the georeferencing. To convert an HGT file to graphics, a program works out the grid size from the file size, marks voids as transparent, and maps the heights to a grayscale heightmap, a colored elevation map, or a shaded relief picture. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with coordinates, and neighboring tiles can be joined into a larger map. Supported by FME and ROI_PAC.
