HGT to PGM Conversion
What are HGT files?
HGT (short for height) is the file extension of elevation data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), a NASA mission of 2000 that mapped the terrain of most of the world, from about 56 degrees south to 60 degrees north. The data are cut into tiles, each covering exactly one degree of latitude and one degree of longitude, and every tile is a separate file. The name tells where it belongs: for example, N20E100.hgt covers the area from 20 to 21 degrees north and from 100 to 101 degrees east. The file itself contains only the heights in meters, with no other information. The data come at two levels of detail, about 90 meters per cell and about 30 meters per cell, and they are in the public domain.
What are PGM files?
The PGM or Portable Graymap format is part of a package of open source graphics programs called Netpbm. Other Netpbm formats include PPM (Portable Pixmap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap), also known under the collective name of PNM (Portable Anymap). A PGM file includes a grayscale image, can work on a UNIX platform, as well as on Windows or Mac OS X, and can render a scope of up to 255 grayscale colors.
