How ISG and EMF differ in practice

ISG is made of pixels and EMF stores geometry, so the conversion traces the image into paths. Once traced, the artwork scales to any size without softening, which is the point of the exercise. It is a reconstruction rather than the original drawing: curves are fitted to the pixel edges, so the cleaner and sharper the source, the closer the paths follow what the designer intended. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the EMF if they need to stay editable.

ISG is a text file format of the International Service for the Geoid, an official service of the International Association of Geodesy, based at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy. The service collects geoid models from many countries and republishes them in this single format, so that users do not have to deal with a different file layout for every country. A geoid model describes the shape of the surface of mean sea level, and it is what allows heights from satellite positioning to be converted into heights above sea level. A file of this type holds the geoid heights as numbers on a regular net of points, accompanied by a header that names the model, its author and year, and the area it covers.
