What are LBL files?
LBL (PDS label) is a detached text label that describes a separate data file in the Planetary Data System format. It is written as a list of keyword = value lines in the Object Description Language and ends with the word END. Some lines are pointers that begin with the ^ character and name the data file and the position where the data start, for example ^IMAGE with the file name and an offset. An image object in the label gives the number of lines, the number of samples in each line, the number of bands, the type and size of each sample, such as 16-bit unsigned integers with the most significant byte first, and often the minimum, maximum, and mean values. Other keywords name the mission, instrument, target, and time of observation, and for map-projected images they describe the projection. The label has the same base name as the data file it describes. To convert such an image to graphics, a program opens the label rather than the data file, learns the layout from it, reads the pixels, applies the scale and offset if they are given, and stretches the values to 8 bits for PNG or JPEG, while TIFF and GeoTIFF can keep 16-bit or floating-point data.
