What are LCP files?
LCP (FARSITE v.4 Landscape File) is a raw multiband raster in which every cell carries several values describing terrain and fuel. The file begins with a header of 7,316 bytes that records the extent of the area, the cell size, the number of bands, the minimum and maximum of each layer, the names of the source files, and a text description. After the header, all values are stored as 16-bit signed integers, and the bands are interleaved by pixel, so that all layers of one cell are written together. Five layers are required: elevation, slope, aspect, fuel model, and tree canopy cover. Optional layers describe the crown of the forest, namely canopy height, canopy base height, and canopy bulk density, and the surface fuel, namely duff and coarse woody debris. The file does not define a map projection, so UTM is typical, and a north-up projection is recommended for fire analysis. To convert an LCP file to graphics, a program reads the header, separates the layers, and produces one picture per layer. Elevation and slope become grayscale or color-ramped images, the fuel model gets a palette because its numbers are class codes, and three chosen layers can form an RGB picture.
