It holds the east-west part of the correction that moves coordinates from an older datum, such as NAD27, to a newer one, such as NAD83, and it is always used together with a file of the same name with the .las extension, which holds the north-south part. Each file covers a region, such as the conterminous United States, Alaska, or Hawaii, with a regular net of points, and every point carries a shift in seconds of arc. Surveyors and mapmakers used these pairs for decades to bring older maps and survey records into agreement with modern positions.
What are HPG files?
HPG is a vector image format created in a standard programming language called HPGL (Hewlett-Packard graphics language). Other extensions created in this language include PLT, HP2 and PL2. All are called "plotter files" and are created by drawing programs such as AutoCAD to be printed using a device specialized in vector graphics. An HPG file uses a line series of two-letter codes to render an image and can also include parameters.
