What are LOS files?
LOS (NADCON Datum Grid Shift) is the longitude half of a NADCON grid pair, and it is useless without the matching latitude file with the .las extension. Both files describe the same net of points over a region, and the .los file stores the shift in longitude, in seconds of arc, at each point. A program finds the shift for a location by interpolating between neighboring points, usually in a straight line, and applies it together with the latitude shift, which moves the coordinates from NAD27 to NAD83, or from NAD83 to the High Accuracy Reference Network. The files are binary, with a short header at the beginning, and a text version with the .loa extension can be made with the NGS utility NADGRD. Western longitudes are stored as negative numbers. The shifts are ground shifts, so they are not applied directly to projected coordinates such as UTM. NADCON 5.0 replaced this layout with the .b format. A LOS grid is not a picture, but it can be shown as one: a program reads the values and paints the grid with a color scale, so that the areas where the longitude shift is largest can be seen, and the map can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF.
