What are MPL files?
MPL (ILWIS Map List) is a small text file that gathers several ILWIS raster maps into one object. It contains the names of the raster maps in the list and a reference to the georeference used by all of them, and if statistical tools such as a variance-covariance or correlation matrix were calculated for the bands, the values are stored in the same file. The maps in the list are normal ILWIS rasters, each made of a text definition file with the .mpr extension and a binary data file with the .mp# extension. The definition file points to a domain, which tells what the cell values mean: reflectance of an image, classes such as land use, plain numbers such as height, or colors. Because of this split, a map list cannot be turned into a picture without its member maps, which must stay in the same folder. To convert a map list to graphics, a program reads the list, opens each raster map, and applies its domain. Single bands become grayscale or color-ramped images, class maps get their own colors, and three bands of a satellite scene can be combined into an RGB composite, with each band stretched to 8 bits. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with coordinates. Supported by ILWIS.
