MTW is the matrix version of the Raster Matrix Format, a format of the GIS programs Panorama and Integration, used to store digital elevation models. A file of this type contains a grid in which every cell holds the height of the terrain, so that it can serve as the basis for relief maps, profiles, slope analysis, and three-dimensional views. Its sibling, the .rsw file, belongs to the same format family but holds ordinary pictures, such as scanned maps and aerial photographs. An MTW file also records how the values should be read, including the units, which can be meters, decimeters, centimeters, or millimeters, and whether the heights are absolute elevations. It also carries simple georeferencing, so that the grid can be placed on a map.

All three are image formats and are sometimes called collectively PNMs (Portable Anymap format). While PGMs contains grayscale images, PPMs include color images and they represent intermediary files used in the conversion of less known formats using the Portable Bitmap Utilities.
