Questions & Answers
MUSICXML files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are MUSICXML files?
MUSICXML is an XML file that records the semantics of a musical score and not only its sound. The root element is either a score-partwise, which groups the bars under each part, or a score-timewise, which groups the parts inside each bar, and both describe the same music. A score holds a header with the work title, the credits, and a list of parts, and then the measures, in which the attributes set the key, the time signature, the clefs, and the divisions of a quarter note, followed by notes with their pitch, duration, voice, stem, and beams, and by rests, ties, slurs, articulations, dynamics, lyrics, and chord symbols. The format covers Western notation and, since version 3.0, also jianpu numbered notation, Turkish and Persian music, and a standard list of 886 instrument sounds for playback. Version 4.0 is the latest. A MusicXML file does not produce sound by itself. It is much more detailed than a MIDI file, which cannot hold the layout of notation, but because it is verbose, the files are large, and the compressed form with the .mxl extension is often used for distribution. The format was created by Recordare in 2001, and its development was moved to the W3C Music Notation Community Group in 2015. Supported by MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, and Dorico.
