What are MXL files?
MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, which has been part of the standard since version 2.0 of 2007. It is a ZIP archive, compressed with the DEFLATE method, that is compatible with the zip format used by Java and by Open Office documents. The archive normally contains a file named mimetype, which must be first and must be stored without compression, a folder named META-INF with a file container.xml, and one or more score files. The container.xml file lists the root files, and the first one is the MusicXML score, with a score-partwise or score-timewise root, that a program should open. The archive can also hold other renditions of the same score, such as a PDF or an audio file, and several MusicXML files, for example a full score and separate parts. The uncompressed score inside has the .musicxml extension, and older versions used .xml. The recommended media type for a compressed file is application/vnd.recordare.musicxml. Because XML text compresses well, an MXL file is usually much smaller than the plain MusicXML score, and most digital sheet music is distributed in this form.
