Questions & Answers
N1 images: Frequently Asked Questions
What are N1 files?
N1 (Envisat Image Format) is the product file of the Envisat mission, with a structure shared by all of its instruments. The file begins with the Main Product Header, a fixed-size block of readable text that identifies the product, the satellite, and the time of observation. After it comes the Specific Product Header, also in text, which is defined for each product type and contains a list of data set descriptors, each giving the name, the position, and the size of one data set that follows. The data sets themselves mix text and binary records, and binary numbers are stored with the most significant byte first. Because the descriptors give exact positions, a program can jump straight to the image data without reading the whole file. To convert an N1 file to graphics, a program reads the headers, selects the measurement data set, such as an ASAR radar image or a MERIS spectral band, and reads the pixels. Radar amplitude is usually converted to a logarithmic scale, because its brightness range is very wide, and then stretched to 8 bits as grayscale, while spectral bands from an optical instrument can be combined into an RGB picture and calibrated with the stored coefficients. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with the location grid. Supported by ESA SNAP and Geomatica.
