Questions & Answers
NAT images: Frequently Asked Questions
What are NAT files?
NAT (MSG Level 1.5 Native Format) is a binary container for the images of the SEVIRI instrument of Meteosat Second Generation. The file is divided into a header, a body of image lines, and a trailer. The header and trailer carry details that are known at the start and the end of the scan, such as the orbit and calibration data and the positions of the image areas, and the structure is self-describing, so a program can interpret it without outside tables. In the body, each group of lines holds one scan line for each of the 12 channels, with three lines for the high-resolution visible channel and one for each of the others, and this group is repeated about 3712 times for a full disk image. Pixels carry 10 bits, packed one after another, and the nominal image size for all channels except the high-resolution one is 3712 by 3712 pixels. A linear relation, with a slope and an offset stored in the header, converts the counts to radiance, which can then be turned into reflectance or brightness temperature. To convert such a file to graphics, a program unpacks the 10-bit values, calibrates them, and builds an image of one channel as grayscale or of three channels as an RGB composite, for example natural color or dust and fog composites. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF with the geostationary projection.
