Questions & Answers
NSF images: Frequently Asked Questions
What are NSF files?
NSF (NATO Secondary Imagery Format, NSIF) is a segmented container that follows the same basic structure as NITF 2.1, with a version marker at the very beginning, NSIF01.00 for the standard version. The file header carries the identification and classification fields and lists the lengths of the segments that follow. Image segments, graphic segments, text segments, and data extension segments are then written one after another, and each image segment has a header with its size, number of bands, bit depth, block layout, and compression. Compression can be absent, or it may use JPEG or JPEG 2000, and the NATO profile for JPEG 2000 defines a preferred way of encoding. Tagged record extensions add details, such as the position of the image on the ground, and readers skip any extension they do not understand by using its length. To convert an NSIF file to graphics, a program checks the version marker, reads the headers, decodes the blocks of the chosen image, and assembles them into a picture. Bands are mapped to RGB, 16-bit values are stretched to 8 bits for PNG or JPEG, and TIFF or GeoTIFF can keep the full range and the coordinates. Because the files may carry classification markings, these should be respected when sharing converted images.
