What are PIX files?
PIX is a container file that keeps a raster image and everything that belongs to it, such as vector layers and georeferencing, in one place, in the manner of a small database. A PCIDSK file has a file header, followed by a set of segments of different types: image channels in 8-bit unsigned, 16-bit signed or unsigned, 32-bit floating-point, or complex values, vector segments, bitmap segments used as masks, lookup tables and pseudocolor tables, georeferencing, ground control points, rational polynomial coefficients, and text descriptions of the file and of each channel. The image data can be organized in several ways: interleaved by pixel, in which all channels of a pixel are together, interleaved by band, in which each channel is stored as a block, interleaved by file, in which the header holds the description and every channel lies in an external file, or tiled, which makes access to a small part of a large image fast and allows compression by run-length encoding or by JPEG. New segments can be added to an existing file, which is something that few formats allow. The format was created in 1988 as a replacement of the older UNIDSK format, which could not grow beyond 16-bit systems, and a development kit for it is available to everyone.
