What are PPI files?
PPI is a product file of IRIS (Interactive Radar Information System), the weather radar software of Vaisala, which is used by weather services in many countries. PPI stands for Plan Position Indicator, the classic radar picture in which the antenna sweeps around the compass at a fixed elevation angle and the echoes are shown on a map centered on the radar. A file of this type holds such a picture for a quantity such as reflectivity, which shows the intensity of precipitation, radial velocity, which shows how fast the air moves toward or away from the radar, or the width of the velocity spectrum. These images are the basis of weather surveillance, storm tracking, and short-range forecasting, and the same family of files also includes products like rainfall accumulation and echo tops.
What are PPM files?
PPM or Portable Pixelmap files are image files included in Netpbm, an open source graphics program. The other widely used Netpbm formats are PGM (Portable Graymap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap). All three are image formats and are sometimes called collectively PNMs (Portable Anymap format). While PGMs contains grayscale images, PPMs include color images and they represent intermediary files used in the conversion of less known formats using the Portable Bitmap Utilities. PPM files are mostly operated on UNIX and Intel-based platforms.
