Questions & Answers
PPI files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are PPI files?
PPI (IRIS data) is a radar product file that stores a picture produced from a single sweep of a weather radar at a constant elevation. The file begins with a structure header and a product configuration block of 320 bytes, which describes the product type, the radar site, the time, and the color scale, and then comes a product end block. If an extended header offset is set, readable text with name and value pairs follows and adds more metadata, and after it there may be a binary data section with the image. The product type code tells how to read the data, with 1 for PPI, 3 for CAPPI, 5 for tops, and 7 for hourly rainfall, and the same file structure serves all of them. The values are stored as coded numbers, which depend on the data type, so they are converted to physical units such as decibels of reflectivity or meters per second of velocity. To convert a PPI file to graphics, a program reads the headers, decodes the numbers, marks cells without echo as transparent, and paints the field with a color scale. Reflectivity is usually shown in colors from blue to red, and velocity in colors that separate motion toward and away from the radar. The radar location and cell size allow the picture to be placed on a map. The result can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF. Supported by the IRIS software of Vaisala.
