How PSD and AI differ in practice

PSD is made of pixels and AI stores geometry, so the conversion traces the image into paths. Once traced, the artwork scales to any size without softening, which is the point of the exercise. It is a reconstruction rather than the original drawing: curves are fitted to the pixel edges, so the cleaner and sharper the source, the closer the paths follow what the designer intended. Lettering in the image is traced as shapes, not recognised as text. Every character arrives as an outline that can be scaled and edited like any other geometry, but not retyped, restyled or searched, and no font is attached to it. Titles and callouts on a scanned drawing usually have to be typed again in the AI if they need to stay editable.
