How RIK and HPG differ in practice

Geospatial coordinates are absolute positions on the earth, and they are large: a projected easting runs to six or seven digits, while latitude and longitude are small decimals. HPG expects a drawing laid out near its own origin in millimetres or inches. The geometry itself converts correctly, but it can land tens of kilometres from 0,0, or arrive at a scale where an entire county is forty units across. Zoom to extents first, then measure one known distance before dimensioning anything. RIK is made of pixels and HPG stores geometry, so the conversion traces the image into real lines, arcs and polylines. The result is editable in CAD: entities can be selected, snapped to and measured, rather than a bitmap wrapped inside an HPG container, which is what a viewer or a lightweight converter usually produces. It is still derived geometry, so expect contours rather than a structured drawing. Dimensions, blocks and meaningful layer names were never in the RIK to begin with.

RIK is a raster map format used for digital maps issued by Lantmäteriet, the Swedish national mapping, cadastral, and land registration authority. A file of this type holds a map as a picture, in which each point is one of up to 256 colors, together with the information needed to place it on the ground in the Swedish national grid. The format exists in three versions, and files of all of them are found in collections of Swedish topographic and general maps, which were distributed on discs and used in navigation programs, hiking and orienteering software, and ordinary mapping systems. Because it is a specialized national format, ordinary image viewers cannot open it, and conversion is the practical way to use such maps elsewhere.
