Questions & Answers
RSS files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are RSS files?
RSS files that carry GeoRSS are ordinary web feeds in which the items are tagged with a location. The location can be written in one of two ways. GeoRSS Simple is a lightweight form with elements such as georss:point, georss:line, georss:polygon, and georss:box, where the coordinates are written as plain numbers, latitude first, and the geometry is always in latitude and longitude on the WGS 84 datum. GeoRSS GML uses a georss:where element that wraps a Geography Markup Language geometry, such as a point, a line string, a polygon, or an envelope for a box, and it can name another coordinate system with the srsName attribute. Both ways describe the same geometry types and mean the same thing. The older W3C Geo form handles only points and is deprecated. The location is added to each item of an RSS 2.0 or RSS 1.0 feed, or to each entry of an Atom 1.0 feed, and software that does not know GeoRSS simply ignores the extra elements, so the feed still works in a normal reader. A box is turned into a rectangle when the data are read as map features. A feed with GeoRSS is live and changes over time, and a map program usually fetches it again at intervals. Supported by ArcGIS Online.
