RST is the raster image file of IDRISI, a GIS and remote sensing system developed by Clark Labs at Clark University in the United States and later renamed TerrSet. The meaning of the numbers is not stored in the file itself but in a small text file with the same name and the .rdc extension, which gives the number of columns and rows, the type of the values, the coordinate system, and the range of values. A color table may come in a third file with the .smp extension. Files in this format were originally saved with the .img extension, which was changed to avoid confusion with other formats.
What are PGM files?
The PGM or Portable Graymap format is part of a package of open source graphics programs called Netpbm. Other Netpbm formats include PPM (Portable Pixmap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap), also known under the collective name of PNM (Portable Anymap).
