What are RST files?
RST (Idrisi Raster A.1) is a raw raster format that is described by a group of small companion files. The .rst file contains only the pixel values, one layer per file, and the text file with the .rdc extension, whose first line reads IDRISI Raster A.1, lists the file title, the data type, the number of columns and rows, the minimum and maximum values, the value that marks missing data, and the name of the reference system. The details of that system are kept in a .ref file, either in the same folder or in the program folders. The data type may be byte, with values from 0 to 255, integer, which is a signed 16-bit number, or real, a 32-bit floating-point number. There is also a 24-bit color type, in which the three channels are stored together for each pixel in the order blue, green, and red. A color table, if the map has one, is stored in a separate .smp file. To convert such a raster to graphics, a program reads the .rdc file first, loads the .rst values according to the declared type, marks missing cells as transparent, and applies the .smp palette if it exists. A classified map keeps its category colors, an elevation layer receives a grayscale or color ramp, and the 24-bit type is saved directly as a color picture.
