Questions & Answers
SBSAR images: Frequently Asked Questions
What are SBSAR files?
SBSAR is the compiled, self-contained form of a Substance material. An artist builds the material in Adobe Substance 3D Designer or Sampler as a graph of nodes and saves it as an .sbs package, and the Publish command then packs the graph into a Substance 3D archive with the .sbsar extension. The archive keeps the output nodes and the parameters that the author chose to expose, such as the amount of dust, the color of a fabric, or the pattern of a stone floor, and it is meant for use in other programs, while the editable source remains in the .sbs file. When the material is loaded, the Substance engine runs the graph and generates the texture maps for physically based rendering, for example the base color, the normal map, the roughness, the metallic value, and the height, at the resolution that was requested, up to 8K. Because the maps are computed and not stored, a fully procedural file can take only a few kilobytes, the textures tile without seams, and one file serves every resolution. The format is supported by Substance 3D Painter and by integrations for Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, and Cinema 4D. Programs that cannot run the engine need the textures baked first into ordinary images such as PNG, EXR, or TGA. Supported by Adobe Substance 3D Designer and Painter.
