How SCU and STEP differ in practice

A SCU file is a job for a blade, so its dimensions are the content. The design was drawn to fit a real object, and a contour that comes out five per cent small looks entirely correct on screen and only fails at the machine, once the material is already spoiled. Measure one known length in the STEP output before cutting from it, and treat the physical size as the thing to verify rather than the shape. A cutter follows outlines and ignores appearance, so fills, stroke colours and line weights in the STEP file have no effect on what the blade does. Two other things do. Every contour has to be closed, because an open path is cut as a line rather than a shape. And duplicated or overlapping contours have to go, because the blade travels each one in turn, cutting the same line twice and tearing thin material.

An SCU file is an XML document that stores the complete layout of a cutting job, including vector shapes with their Bezier paths, text, groups and transformations, layer and stroke settings, page and cutting mat dimensions, and the target machine profile. An embedded PNG thumbnail and a set of project notes with author, category and keyword fields are usually saved alongside the artwork. Files with this extension are commonly found in commercial template libraries for vinyl, cardstock, heat transfer film and device screen protectors. The same extension was also used many years ago by ColoRIX for raster images, so SCU files should be identified by their content rather than by their name alone.
