What are WIRE files?
WIRE is a binary file in which Alias saves a design scene, and it keeps both the shapes of the model and the settings used to display it. The geometry includes NURBS surfaces of high degree, which are patches defined by control points and weights that stay smooth at any scale, curves of several kinds such as polylines, splines, and NURBS curves, and sets of polygons for models built from facets. Around the geometry, the file stores layers, groups, shaders, lights, cameras, backgrounds, the render settings, and variants of a design. The textures and environment images that the scene uses can be embedded in the file, so it can be moved between computers without losing them. The format is proprietary, compressed, and versioned, and a program can open an older file and save it in the current version. Developers can read and write it through the Alias OpenModel library. Other programs read it only in part: for example, 3ds Max imports the NURBS surfaces and basic shader data but not polygon meshes, curves, or lights, and cannot save to this format, so models going back to Alias are exchanged as OBJ files.
