What are XLSM files?
XLSM is the macro-enabled version of the XLSX format. It has the same package structure as an XLSX file, a ZIP archive with XML parts for the workbook, the sheets, the shared strings, the styles, and the charts, and in addition it carries a VBA project with the code of the macros. In the extensions of Office Open XML, the letter x marks a format without macros, and the letter m marks a format that may contain macros. Excel saves a workbook with macros only in this format, and if the file is saved as XLSX, the macros are removed, and the warning that Excel shows can be missed. The macros are disabled by default, and the program displays a security warning, so the user has to enable them. Because macros can contain malicious code, mail filters and security programs often treat XLSM files with suspicion, and they should come only from trusted sources. The limits are the same as in XLSX: 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns on a sheet. The media type is application/vnd.ms-excel.sheet.macroEnabled.12. Supported by Microsoft Excel.
