Questions & Answers
ARROW files: Frequently Asked Questions
What are ARROW files?
ARROW (GeoArrow IPC File) is a columnar file in which a table is stored as a fixed number of record batches, with a footer that allows random access to any batch. The recommended extension for this file form is .arrow, while the streaming variant, which is processed from start to end, uses .arrows. Each column has a type, and a geometry column is marked with an Arrow extension type whose name, for example geoarrow.point, geoarrow.polygon, geoarrow.wkb, or geoarrow.wkt, says how the shapes are encoded. In the native encoding, the raw coordinates are kept in contiguous buffers, with nested lists of offsets that tell where each line, ring, or polygon begins, and in the WKB and WKT encodings each geometry is a binary or text value. The extension metadata can carry the coordinate system, for example as PROJJSON. A GeoArrow file is still an ordinary Arrow file, and the GeoArrow specification is still evolving. A file of this kind is vector data, so converting it to graphics means rendering: a program reads the geometry and attribute columns, draws points, lines, and polygons on a canvas in the coordinate system of the data, colors them by an attribute if requested, and saves the picture as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF. A resolution and an extent must be chosen for this.
